Introduction The distributions and abundances of animal species result from individual habitat selection decisions, as well as population-level processes (Brown 1984). Habitat selection is a hierarchical process (Johnson 1980) that occurs across multiple spatial scales, in which habitat features characterized at a range of scales of both grain (resolution) and extent influence patterns of habitat use (McGarigal et al. 2016).
