Brazilian authorities said they have detained a police officer who also owned a bank believed to be one of the financial institutions laundering money for a major criminal organization. Brazil's Federal Police and the Special Action Group for Combating Organized Crime (GAECO) of the São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office launched Operation Hydra on Tuesday, targeting fintechs used by the First Capital Command (PCC) to launder illicit proceeds.

The Ministry of Labor and Employment of Brazil (MTE) updates its so-called Dirty List every six months, most recently on October 7. The latest list includes two municipal councilors who were re-elected on October 6, along with two candidates who failed to win seats. Eduardo Ribeiro Lima was elected for the ninth time in Beberibe, a city in the northeastern state of Ceará.

Operation Terra Fértil (Fertile Land) saw 280 officers execute 80 search warrants in seven states across the country. In addition to the arrests, police seized multiple aircraft, vehicles, and watercraft used by the traffickers. Federal police estimate that the group has moved more than R$5 billion (US$880 million) worth of product over the past five years. The traffickers used shell companies to launder their illicit gains.

Among the seven people detained is a former employee of the Pará Environmental Secretariat (SEMAS), the agency said. Officers also executed nine search and seizure warrants and froze bank accounts. The Amazon rainforest was long considered the planet’s largest carbon sink before severe deforestation caused parts of the forest to emit more carbon dioxide than they can absorb, according to scientists cited by the Council on Foreign Relations.
