We’ve hit that point in the summer, where, we might be getting a little more lax about keeping kids off screens. (It can be exhausting, I get it.) The last thing parents want our kids to do the rest of the summer is to spend all day watching YouTube videos or playing moreMinecraft. We’re always hoping our kids can find a little more balance with screen time over the summer, and that whatever screen time they do have can be used maybe in uh, more creative or productive ways.

As if I haven’t raved about the Rebel Girls books and the Rebel Girls app enough, I am now touting of the Rebel Girls Podcast. Since 2018, they have been producing three wonderful biographical audio stories a week, each just 14-20 minutes or so–perfect for restless kids (or busy parents). Starting this week, in honor of the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, they’re featuring 10 engaging audio stories about Hispanic women that kids will enjoy getting to know, if they don’t already.

Sometimes we think of reading apps as being for little kids, but reading apps for kids in high school and middle school can be extremely helpful. Whether your kids are voracious readers or a bit more reluctant to get lost in a book when there are new video game levels to conquered, we are big believers in encouraging reading wherever and whenever possible to help us grow lifelong lovers of reading. Yes, even when they’re reading on their phones and tablets.
