Regardless, Kilmer’s turn as a rogue secret service agent dedicated to rescuing her from Saudi sex traffickers offers serious John Wayne in The Searchers vibes that proved the former Batman should have been as big of a stalwart action hero as that other bro from Top Gun.

Holland(Prime) Despite scattershot reviews, this largely Nashville shot Nicole Kidman neo-noir about a smalltown Michigan teacher who suspects her husband is having an affair is an unhinged trip that never quite veers into American Beauty’s urbanite contempt for the rest of us. With assists from Gael Garcia Bernal and Matthew Macfayden, this would have been a heck of a weekend at the art theater circa 2006.

Good afternoon, everyone. April Fools' Day is tomorrow. Be careful out there. Onward. Hiked up to Mount LeConte in the Smokys over the weekend and stayed in the lodge near the top. They serve you meals and provide you a bed for the night. Somewhere between glamping and camping, except you have to hike seven miles—uphill the entire way—to get there. The whole experience, like all backpacking trips, is a kind of simulated escape from the ever present tendrils of modern life.

Good afternoon, everyone. I’m thinking of the Trailer Park Boys scene where rockstar Sebastian Bach goes to the model train convention. And as luck would have it, on Saturday, the Nashville Steam Preservation Society is holding an open house to show off their restoration of a 1942 steam locomotive. There’s no crying at film festivals. Since the rise of Sundance in the 1980s, the right type of indie film has defined itself by its fringeness–the last holdover of Gen X irony that’s managed to survive in this cultural zeitgeist. Bawling openly is for people who watch The Notebook. But, when Bob Trevino Likes It screened at the Nashville Film Festival last September, the sound of sniffles was louder than the end credits music.
