Heather Gallagher, founder of Asheville Performing Arts Academy (APAA), says her decision to launch the business 20 years ago was a leap of faith. “I was young and dumb enough to try it,” she says with a laugh. After graduating from UNC Asheville in 2002, the Cleveland, Ohio, native decided to stay in Buncombe County to teach. She served as the director of religion, liturgical music and outreach for a kindergarten through eighth grade program.
