A tour guide operator interrupted an outing for his guests to help rescue a beached whale calf in Galway yesterday. Damien O'Malley was bringing out a group on a tour of Roundstone Bay and Island as part of his business when he saw what he at first though was just a peculiar shine in the water. "I wasn't too sure what it was," he said. "Then I thought it was a dead dolphin that had landed in [on the shore].

A woman who was a victim of sexual assault has described as "soul destroying" having to hand over her counselling records to a defence team. Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan yesterday signalled that he intends to take legislative action to further restrict the disclosure of counselling records from complainants during sexual assault trials.

The Rivers Trust is urging people from all over the island of Ireland to take part in their annual river survey. The Big River Watch Survey takes place from Friday 25 April to Thursday 1 May. Over that week, the trust is asking people to observe a local river, lough of stream and record their findings on their free app. The app will prompt the user to answer questions about what they can see and observe. No special knowledge is required.

A five-year project using genetics, genomics and data to improve cancer diagnostics and treatment for children could "change what we consider to be a 'cure' for cancer," according to a paediatric consultant. Professor Owen Smith, Consultant Paediatric Haematologist at Children's Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin, has launched Ireland's first clinical study of genomics approaches in cancer care.
