A REPORT EXAMINING Public Order policing has said that garda use of force in violent incidents is influenced about concerns around edited video appearing on social media. It has also been determined in the report that their ability to respond robustly to incidents like the Dublin Riot is dependent on if they have enough numbers to do so safely. The findings are in a review carried out by the Policing Authority in the wake of the Dublin riot in November 2023 which was published yesterday.

A SENIOR GARDA who leads organised crime investigations has been appointed as the new Deputy Commissioner in An Garda Síochána. Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, announced the appointment after a lengthy process. Justin Kelly has been at the forefront of major drug seizures and other operations including the successful seizure of the MV Matthew off the south coast.

Justin Kelly has been named as deputy Garda commissioner after a lengthy recruitment campaign to fill the role. Mr Kelly was previously assistant commissioner with responsibility for tackling serious and organised crime. He recently spoke at Europol’s headquarters in The Hague about the infiltration of the encrypted communication tool Ghost, which was used for criminal activities worldwide.
