St. Patrick’s Day is a convivial holiday celebrating the Irish saint. Its celebration now extends so far beyond Ireland and its people that you’ll hear some say everyone’s a little Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. While people of all ages celebrate the holiday, it’s mainly a day when cocktails take center stage.

Zest or peel the lemons: You don’t want any of the white pith. To remove only the yellow skin use a microplane zester to zest the lemon skin or a vegetable peeler to remove only the yellow part. Save the peeled lemons to make lemonade later!Combine the lemon peel and the liquor: Combine the lemon peels and high-proof liquor into a glass jar. Seal it and store it out of direct sunlight.

Let’s start this round up with the most recognizable treat that kids (and I) gravitate toward: a round cookie. Crispy, chocolatey, and fun to make, these chocolate chip cookies are great for dunking into a tall glass of milk. These heart-shaped butter cookies come together very easily using not a spoon, not a whisk, but your hands! There will be a lesson in patience: It does require that you wait and chill your dough for up to one day. Vibrant red cookies to match those homemade Valentine’s?

Whipping egg whites into a meringue makes for an extra-light and frothy eggnog. Beating the yolks until they're ribbony ensures that they can be easily folded into the whipped whites, resulting in a smoother eggnog for the jello shots. Blooming the gelatin hydrates it and ensures that the jello shots set properly. As a child, I never saw anyone drink eggnog. My parents and grandparents never served it. My friends' homes were all nog-free, too, as far as I could tell.
