After three days of competing in Karate at the African Games in Accra – Ghana, Cameroon’s six-man team has emerged with a bronze medal. Yoan Junior Dassi Tchouela won the lone medal, bronze, in the kumite individual male -67kg category to save Cameroon’s face in the competition. Cameroon’s six karatekas participated in team kata, team kumite, individual kata and individual kumite.

The exact number of refugees, internally displaced persons, asylum seekers and returnees in Cameroon will soon be available thanks to the Forced Displacement Survey (FDS) to be introduced in Cameroon. A partnership between the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the National Institute of Statistics (INS) was signed this February 15, 2024 to facilitate this process.

“There is no second language in Cameroon; just the other language,” argues Secondary Education Minister, Prof Pauline Nalova Lyonga. The National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism (NCPBM) has set the ball rolling for the year 2024. The President of the Commission, Peter Mafany Musonge indicated this as he chaired the first bi-annual session of the NCPBM for the 2024 financial year this January 25, 2024 at the Yaounde Conference Centre. Opening the session, Peter Mafany highlighted the fact that the Commission witnessed a drop in its draft budget for 2024, compared to that of 2023.

Discussions are on-going towards raising Cameroon to a regional power between 2025 and 2035. The discussion kicked off this January 16, 2024 during the first phase of an inclusive national consultation in Yaounde, organised by the African Centre for Competitive Intelligence, popularly known by its French acronym, CAVIE. This first phase of the year-long project dubbed “Puissance237” started off with briefing of pressmen from different media organs on the objectives and scope of the project.

Students in secondary schools across Cameroon have been exhorted to stay away from acts of violence or face sanctions as severe as prosecution in court. This warning was made by the Head of the Division of Judicial Affairs at the Ministry of Secondary Education, Léopold Tchatchouang, during an orientation session organised at Government Bilingual Technical High School, Nsam in Yaounde, following a case of violence recorded yesterday, January 8, 2024.

Plans are underway to make the biometric youth card a must-have before registering for any competitive entrance examination in Cameroon. This was amongst many recommendations outlined at the end of the 4th Ordinary Session of the Steering Committee of the National Youth Observatory this December 27, 2023. To buttress this, the Permanent Secretary of the Observatory, Pierre Dominique Mveme Atangana, noted that Parliament has already adopted the use of the cards.

Fewer cars on the streets, not typical of a Tuesday morning in Yaounde, is what I realised when I stepped out this Tuesday, December 26, 2023. It is the morning after Christmas and many people are still recovering from Christmas Day celebration. I board a taxi and observe the calmness of the morning. Litter, unfortunately, has been abandoned at various roadside corners as households and relaxation spot owners have cleaned their spaces and brought the dirt to these spots.
