Lifeboats News Release On Thursday evening, 16 May, Lough Derg RNLI volunteers launched on exercise to discharge 3 time expired white flares. At sea white flares are used for collision avoidance. The Atlantic 85 lifeboat carries 6 white flares for the purpose of illuminating a search area when looking for casualties.

Lifeboats News Release Blessed with good weather, the third Lap the Lake charity cycle on Saturday last, 11 May, was an immense success, raising €17,500 for Lough Derg RNLI Over 250 cyclists took part in the event; some chose to complete the 120km route while others opted for the 65km course.

At 12.16am Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat Jean Spier launched with helm Eleanor Hooker, crew Doireann Kennedy, Joe O’Donoghue and Tom Hayes on board. The wind was westerly Force 2. Visibility was very good. As the lifeboat was launching, Valentia Coast Guard informed the volunteers that the family had been taken off the casualty vessel, and that our colleagues at Killaloe Coast Guard had also launched to assist.
