Cyprus tax authorities faced stark questions last week for the failure to collect €14m in unpaid VAT due on Roman Abramovich’s fleet of luxury superyachts. Sotiris Markides, the tax commissioner, told the Cyprus parliament that procedural loopholes had made it impossible to collect the money owed as the result of the elaborate tax-dodging scheme revealed in January by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ).

HMRC says it has has taken landmark action against a notorious promotor of offshore tax avoidance schemes who it says has cost the exchequer £1bn in lost revenue. The tax agency said it issued stop notices to Paul Baxendale-Walker covering two offshore arrangements, the first time it said such action has been taken against an individual rather than a company. He could face criminal prosecution if he does not comply.

Five of the UK’s six main political parties accepted illegal donations made on behalf of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ), exposing how easy it is to bypass laws meant to limit improper influence by foreign donors. TBIJ arranged a series of multiple small payments to each of the six major parties. The payments were individually less than £500 – the lower limit of the legal definition of a political donation – but passed that threshold once added together.

A retired colonel, who was the deputy director of the Government’s Covid-19 task force, has been cleared of falsely claiming £43,470 to pay his children’s boarding school fees. Prosecutors said Marcus Reedman, 51, claimed continuity of education allowance (CEA) payments to help fund his three children’s £75,000-a-year private school fees, which matched his entire British Army salary. Reedman’s last job was as the deputy director of the Covid-19 task force with the rank of acting brigadier.
