I first encountered the writing of Claire Keegan when I met her at a literary festival in Victoria more than twenty years ago. I saw her again in Dublin and elsewhere, but I knew from the beginning that hers was an original voice, quiet and compelling.

The mercurial, self-mythologising novelist and journalist Joseph Roth, author of the 20th-century masterpiece The Radetzky March, was the finest observer and chronicler of his age. Endless Flight travels with Roth from his childhood on the eastern edge of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to an unsettled life spent roaming Europe between the wars.

I remember when Sigrid Nunez’s eighth title, The Friend, came out and three very different people— friends—told me how great it was, that I had to read it, and that I didn’t have to be a “dog person” to enjoy it. It took me a bit of time to get to it, but I’m happy to report it’s all true.
