The cover of volume one of these two massive books, which together weigh more than six kilos, is a tongue-in-cheek riff on the ancient Indian Tree of Life design, known in Europe since the 16th century. ‘Vegetable Tree’, designed in 1944 by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, and still in production, shows a brightly coloured tree hung with jolly/grotesque vegetables and quirky leaves.

Open the front door and the transformation is striking. All the woodwork, from the hall up, is painted in aubergine gloss. The walls are pink, and an abstract Gideon Hatch rug and a green and white Pale Fire lamp make quite an impact. ‘They had showed us a pink room in their inspiration images’ says Romanos, 'and we suggested putting the colour right up the stairs, the aubergine woodwork makes the pink less girly’. ‘All our friends love the aubergine’ says their client.

The hotel takes its name from the previous owner of the estate, the press magnate and Cabinet Minister of the 1920s, 30s and 40s, Lord Beaverbrook. The house was built in 1893, and, like most grand houses of this date and importance, had a Dower House on the estate, for the use of the owner’s widow once the younger generation had taken over the main house.
