For the fourth consecutive year, the WAC experienced membership changes over the offseason. UTRGV and Stephen F. Austin announced their departures for the Southland in the summer, while Grand Canyon and Seattle U will do their last go-round in the conference before joining the Mountain West and WCC, respectively, next July. But in the present, the league ladder has GCU at the top and everyone else in the (rather distant) rearview mirror.

Only six conferences have sent 14 or more teams to the Big Dance since 2022. So even while the Mountain West’s NCAA Tournament struggles remain, the league has bounced back with a vengeance after the late-2010s lull. The work is cut out for the conference after a record six tournament bids last March, though. Only six of the MWC’s 15 all-league players are back this year with superstars Jaedon LeDee, Isaiah Stevens and Great Osobor moving on to greener pastures.

The Seahawks were the 6-seed in the NEC Tournament before rattling off three consecutive road wins to capture the league’s auto bid, culminating in a First Four victory in the NCAA Tournament.

With conference play kicking into high gear, several leagues are poised for competitive title races over the next two months. There might not be a single conference in college basketball quite as wide-open as the Mountain West, though.
