Shema is the most well-known and arguably the most central prayer of Judaism. Jews have sacrificed their lives for millennia with the words of Shema Yisrael on their lips, and are praised as the people who “say Shema twice daily.”But—as we’ll see—Shema is far more than just a prayer (in fact much of our prayer service is not made up of what we think of as prayers in the conventional sense). To pray means to speak to G‑d.
