Concurrent opioid use exacerbates neuroHIV by increasing neuroinflammation, neuronal injury, cognitive deficits, and altering antiretroviral concentrations in the brain. The interactions between HIV proteins, like Tat, opioids, and antiretrovirals significantly impact drug distribution and effectiveness within the brain.
