In Albuquerque, it’s not pumpkin spice that heralds fall, but several hundred hot-air balloons that float across an azure blue sky. Watching them soar peacefully above the Rio Grande Valley from my school bus stop was a comforting annual ritual in the way the change of leaves must be in the northeast. Balloon gazing was paired with frosty breath and a clarity of shape and color – indications of the cool and dry conditions that hot-air balloonists dream about.
