50 years ago, furious Black parents set forth a motion making modest demands: equal educational opportunity for their children and good schools in their own neighborhoods. It never happened. When they sued Boston Public Schools for a better education for Black children, instead they got busing. “We reached out to the original plaintiffs, many of whom had never spoken publicly about their stories about why they joined the lawsuit,” said Taboada.

June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate LGBTQ+ rights and spirit. Many events are happening in and around Boston, including the “Rainbow Riot” comedy show on Saturday, June 15th, at the Deep Thoughts record store in Jamaica Plain. Organizer Shelby LeCuyer said the goal of the comedy and music show is to elevate queer stories and voices. People across Boston honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, taking a moment to contemplate the civil rights leader’s words and vision in formal gatherings and in quiet moments of contemplation. At the City of Boston’s official celebration at Boston University, keynote speaker Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor decried what she called the “distortions of King’s legacy” by both white conservatives and liberals who sought to spread a passive version of the civil rights leader’s views.

Rachel Newman and Ciara Evans jumped out of the frigid water surrounding South Boston that they had just hurled themselves into and hurried back to the shore. Then, they turned around and did it again. “My brother always goes back twice, so I have to do the same or better,” Newman said with a shivering smile. This was the Newton duo’s third New Year’s Day plunge, an annual ritual run by the “World Famous L Street Brownies” swimming club of South Boston.
