Residents in the Far West of New South Wales say they're losing morale as a power outage across the region drags on into its seventh day. Storms flattened electricity towers near Broken Hill last week, but residents were again plunged into darkness on Tuesday night when a backup generator tripped. With food going off in fridges and replacement generators on the way, the state government says it will investigate how both the region's backup generators failed.

The bill would have required women seeking a pregnancy termination after 27 weeks and 6 days to deliver the baby alive. Those who voted it down say the debate was shrouded in misinformation and that the bill would have put women's health at risk.

A team of Australian researchers has collated data on a group of so-called "invisible" cancer patients in what's believed to be a world first. Thousands of Australians live with metastatic cancer, the term for cancer that has spread beyond its original tumour, but until now all the available figures have been estimates. For the first time, patients with metastatic breast cancer have been counted in New South Wales and advocates say the data will lead to better treatment.
