Shortbelly rockfish Shortbelly rockfish are an important prey species for seabirds and marine mammals in the California Current, and a non-target bycatch species in the commercial rockfish and Pacific hake trawl fisheries. In 2018, an explosion in shortbelly rockfish abundance following high recruitment during the marine heatwave nearly caused the closure of the hake fishery.
