The candidates for the House of Delegates elections have, for the most part, been set as the race to determine power in the state house gets underway. Downballot, a handful of primary elections are expected for House seats held by Republicans in the Southwest and Southside regions. Over the weekend, Republican officials confirmed that enough candidates have filed to force three primaries in the region.

Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat, have submitted the paperwork necessary to face off in the race to be Virginia’s next governor, and the first woman to hold the seat. There may be a Republican primary for the executive office in June, however. Earle-Sears’ campaign filed paperwork to appear on the ballot, and the number of signatures her campaign submitted was verified by the Republican Party of Virginia on March 19.

Legislators worked into the evening, reviewing 205 budget recommendations, 8 line-item vetoes, 157 legislative vetoes, and 159 bill amendments.

The Virginia General Assembly approved dozens of Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s budget amendments while it rejected dozens more Wednesday, setting up a potential fight between the Democratic-controlled body and the Republican governor as they work to pass a spending package. An amendment to expand relief to victims of February’s floods, a reduction in funding for site readiness in Pulaski County, and money for school construction were among the budget items adopted by the legislature.

Tens of millions of federal dollars for community projects will not be sent to Southwest and Southside Virginia, or anywhere in the state for that matter, this year. Congress passed a continuing resolution in mid-March to fund the government through September and avoid a shutdown, the third such measure in fiscal year 2025. That action will round out a full 12 months of federal funding through stop-gap measures for the fiscal year.
