UC San Francisco has received a transformative gift from the Crankstart Foundation to create a workforce development program to train about 2,000 San Francisco residents over the next five years for careers in health care. The $14 million pledge will support partnerships with local nonprofits to train community members for well-paid roles as medical practice coordinators, medical assistants and radiology technologists at UCSF.

Hospitals in poor communities are significantly less likely to obtain certification for stroke services, which makes them unable to provide urgent, lifesaving treatment, UC San Francisco researchers are reporting in a 14-year study of the nation’s hospitals. By contrast, hospitals located in economically mixed or affluent communities were more likely to become stroke certified. Such specialized services are associated with better stroke care and patient outcomes.

Reshaping urban transportationMicromobility, the use of small vehicles for one or two passengers, has surged 50-fold over the last decade, especially in dense areas with the introduction of electric-powered motors and ride-sharing platforms. The low-cost, low-emission scooters and bicycles can travel up to 28 miles an hour, are convenient, affordable, reduce congestion and allow riders to cover more distance with less effort.
