INTRODUCTION This research is part of a large-scale study designed to investigate the impact of soil and burial environments on archaeological leather (Halldórsdóttir et al., 2024). The paper focuses on the archaeological environments that preserve large quantities of Roman leather at the site of Vindolanda, a Roman-period military settlement in Northern England occupied from around 85 CE into the sub-Roman period (fifth to seventh century).
