Beach balls, sandals, sailboats, picnics, local vegetables, fishing, grilling and yes, ice-cream cones. “You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream.”Memorial Day weekend is when we begin to change our behavior. Taxes have been paid, winter clothes, the puffy jackets, boots and other bulky clothes, have been stored away. Memorial Day weekend is also associated with cleaning, sorting and organizing. Bringing the summer deck furniture out of the garage, washing down the deck, sweeping the porch.

There is nothing as lovely as celebrating Mother’s Day. A celebration, unlike many of the other special days throughout the year, that has about it a sense of elegance and quiet. The focus in the family shifts away from letting the “women” in the family plan and organize a gathering, to the “family” who begins planning something just for her.

Not certain why I started thinking about bears. Perhaps because I’m reading Faulkner and “The Bear” is a powerful story in “Go Down Moses” about hunting a legendary bear. Many decades ago, growing up in the shadows of the White Mountains, I hold a memory in my mind’s eye of visiting the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts shop that was in the Notch, just at the edge of Franconia. That small shop hasn’t been there for decades, although there is a League of NH Craftsmen (the organization was rebranded and named in 1968) store on Main Street in Littleton. There are also shops in Meredith, Sandwich and Concord.
