Khalida Ahmadzai learned to make jalapeno chutney from her own mother. In her native Afghanistan, many varieties of jalapenos grow. They’re small and potent. “Yes, they are very spicy,” the new entrepreneur confirms through her son, Waheed’s, translation. With a laugh, they remember how visiting Americans underestimated the peppers because they saw older Afghans eating them raw. Now, Ahmadzai wants to introduce more people to the flavors of her country.
