For years, tariffs were a nearly forgotten economic tool, widely considered bad policy by both sides of an entrenched free-trade consensus. Things have changed. Donald Trump argues that tariffs can do everything from pay for child care to eliminate the national deficit. The Biden Administration has used them to backstop environmental policy and as a geopolitical tool. We at Democracy weren’t sure what to think, so we invited three astute commentators to discuss the pros and cons.

Chinese auto manufacturer BYD is on a mission to open “a new era where electricity is cheaper than oil” with the launch of their $10,000 EV, the Seagull. The Seagull, which starts at just one-third of the starting price of a Nissan Leaf and one-fourth of the starting price of a Tesla Model 3, has a range of up to 250 miles (compared to the Leaf’s 149) and plugs into a regular household outlet.

IntroductionIn 2017, former President Trump and congressional Republicans enacted sweeping changes to the tax code via the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). Many of the law’s provisions were not made permanent, however, and hallmark changes to the individual income and estate tax will expire at the end of 2025.1 As a result, a renewed debate over tax reform has kicked off among policymakers and will accelerate over the next year.
