Between April and December 2024 alone, an additional R210-million in irregular spending was generated, while two Pretoria-based children’s homes went without subsidy payments.

The future of Pretoria’s specialised education is under threat after the Gauteng Department of Education slashed funding to Schools of Specialisation (SoS) by a staggering 81.36% since 2022. Funding dropped from R69.29-million in 2022 to R13-million in 2024, a move the DA said would cripple the province’s ability to prepare learners for critical industries such as engineering, biotechnology, science, and manufacturing.

Recent responses in the Gauteng legislature have shed light on the employment of people with a history of sexual offences at public schools. Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said his department (GDE) currently employs 12 individuals who have been implicated in sexual offences. Chiloane was answering the DA’s Michael Waters’ questions in the legislature. Steve Mabona, GDE spokesperson, confirmed to Rekord this group consists of seven educators and five non-teaching staff.

Prominent businessman Arnold Pistorius of Twin City Development has written to the metro, demanding it respond to his proposal by April 17. In February, MMC for Corporate Services Kholofelo Morodi, said the city could not determine who had created the 15-by-15m paved helipad.
