A Salford resident has undergone an ambitious plan this November running 60 miles for the men’s mental health. The charity fundraiser was dedicated to Movember saw a Salford local resident trace a huge number 60 across Greater Manchester. The big running event will completed by George Frewer, who will be looking to complete the ultra-marathon challenge over two days. The ambitious challenge will see George run across the region across both the November 30 and December 1.

The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government will have schedule and service changes for Indigenous Peoples' Day on Monday, Oct. 14. The county animal shelter will be closed Monday, in addition to animal control officers not being available for any non-emergency phone calls, according to a press release. Any animal emergency service – including an animal bite, an injured or sick animal or a trapped animal – will be provided through 911.

Brian Steele began his role as associate dean of admissions for the University of Georgia School of Medicine as of Oct. 1, according to a UGA press release. He previously served as the associate dean of admissions for the School of Medicine at the University of Kansas. Before working at KU, Steele held roles in recruitment and admission offices at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. He graduated from West Texas A&M University with a degree in political science.

The Paine College National Alumni Association, Athens Chapter, introduced the Lucius Henry Holsey scholarship fund to honor the former slave on Jan. 27. Holsey founded Augusta’s historically Black college in 1882. Holsey arrived in Athens in 1857 when he was 14 years old, where he was enslaved by a professor at the University of Georgia.

Joro spiders, an internet phenomenon that incite fear in many, are not anything to be afraid of, according to Andy Davis, assistant research scientist at the University of Georgia’s Odum School of Ecology. “There’s this weird irony — [Joro spiders are] the safest, gentlest creature in the world, but yet, people are terrified about this thing, and they want to kill it instantly,” Davis said. The bright yellow, palm-sized spiders create big and strong webs, Davis said.
