Alec Lange is the vocalist for the local hardcore metal bands Snuff Tape and Monastery. He’s tall, tatted and surprisingly soft-spoken. Sitting in the basement green room of Ace’s High Saloon, a country-hardcore bar in Salt Lake City, Lange recalled listening to metal since he was a child. “According to my folks, my favorite album, when I was like 2 or 3 years old, was Metallica's Black Album,” Lange said. “That's all I would let them play.”Eventually, around 14, he started to mimic what he heard.

In early May, an 18 year old male drowned at Sand Hollow State Park, an extremely popular spot in southwest Utah. A group of four was swimming in the park’s “dive area” when one of them noticed the victim struggle and slip under the water. Rescue attempts were unsuccessful and the group went ashore for help. The body was found 2 hours later. In Utah, state numbers say 31 people drown per year.

You know, in the last few issues I’ve been kinda slamming a filmmaker named Jean-Luc Godard, so it’s only fitting that the guy has got a new film and it’s coming to the Tower starting October 14. I guess I need to explain myself. For those unenlightened souls, I’m not talking about the captain of the Starship Enterprise … this is the leader of the French New Wave movement and one of the world’s foremost film scholars and critics, and perhaps the most influential filmmaker of the last 35 years.

Local Metal, Man Seems like whenever you hear about eclectic art in SLC, it’s always some type of off-the-wall genre or the usual hype of ethnic or cultural society. Well, we also have something in our beloved city that is equally off-center and driven by a different source. Call it the underbelly of the music scene, or maybe even a holdout from years passed, but it survives and thrives in our fair city like a parasite. We call it heavy metal.

Harry AngelBeen There, Done That!Little Guy RecordsThere wasn’t a press kit or a bio, just a CD and a business card. I gave the number a ring. Barry Carter is a native New Zealander who recorded the CD in Australia. He laid the basic tracks down and then had various friends come in to add them. My impression of the album was that it was a New Zealand band— even with a local PO Box plainly listed on the cover, this music didn’t sound American to me.

I love my job. I don’t get paid squat, but I love it anyway. One of the reasons being: I get to talk to some very neat people. This is one of those occasions. First, let me say that I hate labels like ‘Acoustic Duo’ and ‘Female Band’. That said, I can tell you about Mary & Monique. They are a Female Acoustic Duo-Band. Having seen and heard them, you now understand my hesitancy to label them in any way. They met years ago and planted the seed of mutual envy and respect for each other’s talent.
