‘It's getting on the property ladder’ - Cost of buying apartment rises

The cost of apartments is rising faster than houses for the first time ever as people try to enter the property ladder. The latest IPAV report shows property prices are up over 5% in the first six months of the year, with apartments leading the way. The four highest in Ireland increases were all for apartments - Westmeath was up 14.44%, Offaly increased by 13%, Donegal was up 12.69% and Kilkenny 12.33%.
Government’s biggest overspends: ‘That’s 162 bike sheds’

From electronic voting to the infamous Dáil printer, the Government has a history of overspending that would put the bike shed to shame. The Government was in hot water last week after it was revealed a bike shed at Leinster House cost €335,000. The shed can store 18 bikes and a breakdown of its cost from the Office of Public Works (OPW) revealed that €3,000 was spent on archaeological services.
Historical sexual abuse: ‘We can’t ignore what we know’

Irish people cannot make the same mistakes as generations before and “ignore” historical sexual abuse in religious orders, according to an activist. Gardaí launched an appeal for reports after a scoping inquiry revealed 2,400 allegations against over 800 people across 300 schools. Gardaí received 160 reports of historical sexual abuse relating to schools run by religious orders between September 4th and September 7th.

Sinn Féin’s new housing proposal is not a “silver bullet” but a fully developed plan for the future of Ireland, according to Eoin Ó Broin. The leading opposition party launched a ‘Home of Your Own’ last Monday, promising to deliver 300,000 homes over five years if elected to Government. The party describes it as a radical alternative to the government’s current housing strategy, insisting it will bring home ownership back into the reach of working people.

How do you re-approach the sex talk with your child when they’re already sexually active – and possibly too active? A parent told Parenting on Moncrieff her 17-year-old son started dating a girl last year and they’re now entering their final year of secondary school. She said she had the sex talk with her son “a long time ago” - and he clearly took it to heart. “I know he’s having sex – and quite a lot of it – because I have found used condoms in different bins in the house,” she said.
Several arrests made following Ireland vs England match

A number of arrests have been made following an incident on Shelbourne Road in Dublin following Ireland’s game against England. There was a heavy Garda presence around the city since Friday night ahead of the Nations League match at Aviva Stadium. Horse-mounted gardaí, along with the Garda helicopter, also patrolled the south city centre and adjoining suburbs. A Garda spokesperson confirmed an incident had taken place and several arrests had been made. No injuries have been reported.
Protest at Shannon Airport to take place today

A national protest is being held at Shannon Airport today to oppose the use of the facility by the US Airforce. From 2pm, groups including Shannonwatch, the Irish Anti-War Movement (IAWM) and Ireland Palestine Solidarity campaign will gather at the airport. Demonstrators are opposing the alleged reports that Shannon Airport has been used to transfer weapons going to Israel.

Synth-pop royalty Marc Almond dealt with a lot of fame in his younger years – but he’s relieved he never had to deal with social media in the 1980s. The former Soft Cell member is performing at the Olympia Theatre on September 26th. Following the release of his latest solo album, I’m Not Anyone, he is touring the UK and Ireland – something he is well used to by now. He told The Anton Savage Show today that when he started Soft Cell with David Wall, they were “belligerent arts students”.

Keir Starmer “understands Ireland” and its values far more than his predecessors, according to a former EU and UK Ambassador. The UK Prime Minister is visiting Ireland today, meeting with Taoiseach Simon Harris to discuss a “renewed” relationship between the two countries. Former Irish Ambassador to the EU and UK Bobby McDonagh said the visit is definitely part of a “reset” for the UK.
Phones not ‘eavesdropping’ on owners – Tech expert

While a new report suggests phones listen to owners for targeted advertising, a tech expert said smartphones aren’t “eavesdropping”. An American report published this week claims Cox Media Group uses something called “active listening”, allowing advertisers to use a phone’s microphone to listen to users and generate targeted advertising. Irish Independent Tech Editor Adrian Weckler explained the report implied a phone passively listens to and tracks the noises around it.
