Dear Answer Angel Ellen: In so many photos, including photos of professionals and celebrities, the women are standing with one ankle crossed over the other. Why? It looks so odd to me!--Valerie H. Dear Valerie: I agree with you. It does look odd. Or, at the very least, unnatural. When I posed your question to a professional photographer I know, she said crossing the ankles has the effect of making the legs look longer in photos.

Dear Answer Angel Ellen: I have recently taken up embroidery and it is a game changer. Sooo relaxing. In these troubled times, I need to chill any way I can and I have found this to be a soothing hobby. My problem is that I need more light AND a magnifier. The ones I have tried - quite a few of them - don't give enough light, don't magnify enough or both. Do you have any suggestions? --Claire W.

Dear Answer Angel Ellen: I live in a place that has very cold winters so I am puzzled by what appears to be a trend in men's headwear. It is what used to be called a stocking cap, but the ones I see -- on both young and older "fashionably" dressed men -- are a shorter version that doesn't cover their ears! What? Why? Huh? Please explain this phenomenon to me, if you can. --Annabel H. Dear Annabel: I am pleased to get a question about a men's fashion trend that doesn't make much sense.

Dear Answer Angel Ellen: I was told years ago that the length of a woman's dress or skirt was in direct proportion to the state of the economy. Is that still true today? And/or what would be the modern equivalent barometer? --Jennifer S. Dear Jennifer: You're talking about "The Hemline Index." This holds that women's skirts are shorter in good economic times and longer in bad. Like most such handy theories, it has proved to be true sometimes.
