Bathing water quality at some of England’s highest-rated beaches can decline sharply during the autumn and winter months when official swimming spots are usually unmonitored, according to an internal Environment Agency (EA) study completed earlier this year. The findings of the study – which have not been published, but have been seen by Unearthed – will cause concern among the UK’s many fans of cold-water swimming.

The Environment Agency (EA) has missed its own response time targets for around three in every four of England’s worst pollution incidents, an Unearthed investigation has found. Over the previous five years, England’s environmental regulator has failed to attend thousands of serious pollution events within targeted response times – including major spills of oil, slurry and sewage.

A plastic offsetting project backed by the food and drink giant Danone has been suspended, following allegations that a recycling facility was built illegally close to a Balinese community and without proper consultation, an Unearthed investigation has found. Danone’s project was set up as an attempt by the French multinational to offset its enormous plastic footprint in Indonesia, and part of its promise to recover more plastic than it uses in the country by 2025.
