On Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m., Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers will take the stage at the Calvert Elks Lodge #2620, the home of bluegrass in Southern Maryland. Joe and the band are driving forces in the world of bluegrass. Over the past three decades, Joe has devoted his life to bluegrass performance and to delivering great bluegrass, gospel and country music through his radio station. Joe is a masterful banjo picker and a gifted singer known for his soaring high tenor voice.

At the Oct. 2 meeting of the Leonardtown Lions Club held at Olde Breton Inn, this year's Melvin Jones Fellowship Award was presented to club member Hilda Mae Gatton. The recipient is selected by those members who have previously received the award and is the highest honor the Lions Club bestows. Hilda Mae was chosen based on her continued assistance with vision and hearing screenings, and for her participation in other club endeavors. Congratulations, Hilda Mae.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Christ Church Parish Hall, located on Zach Fowler Road in Chaptico, Southern Maryland Traditional Music and Dance will hold a contra dance. The evening starts at 7 p.m. with a half-hour beginner’s dance workshop followed by live music performed by the SOMD Open Band and dancing from 7:30 to 10 p.m.Admission is $12 or $8 for members. Children under age 17 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult; band members are also admitted free of charge.
