Police have closed the Western Highway at Kiata in western Victoria after the discovery of a body. Victoria Police said in a statement a passer-by found human remains on the highway just after 8am on Friday. Police said the cause of death was yet to be determined but it was being treated as a possible hit and run. The body is yet to be formally identified. The highway will remain closed in both directions while police investigate.

Joe Koumera, a participant in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, died while in regional Australia. His family on an island in Vanuatu has not been contacted by Australian authorities and wants information about his death and police investigation. Mr Koumer's death is still under investigation and his family is longing for answers.

Uranium mining is banned in Victoria, but a mine in the state's west will be able to ship a rare earths concentrate to the US to be processed into commercial quantities of uranium. The plan has sparked farmer protests, and Friends of the Earth is calling on the Victorian government to block the exports. The mine is due to start producing and shipping the concentratein 2026.

Thousands of Australians are being asked to pay membership fees to general practitioner (GP) clinics to access bulk-billed medical care. Almost 100 GP clinics have started charging the fees — according to medical data company Cleanbill — and experts say it's a breach of Medicare rules. Grattan Institute health program director Peter Breadon said the practice amounted to "double dipping".

Farmers in the Murray-Darling Basin fear proposed mineral sand mines could raise water tables and increase soil salinity. Mining companies plan to pump billions of litres of water annually into on-site pits if the projects are approved. The NSW and Victorian governments will consider the applications for two major projects in their states.
