The Melbourne diocese will run out of cash in 2028 unless it takes major action in the next one to two years. Newly released synod papers reveal this, alongside a recommendation to sell an estimated 10 to 20 per cent of the value of the diocese’s property portfolio to achieve financial sustainability. Synod papers state the diocese can no longer afford to fund its redress obligations through its cash reserves.

Anglicans have been urged to share their thoughts on what Melbourne needs in a new archbishop as the diocese’s board to nominate candidates prepares to report on its initial findings to synod. Anglicans can also submit the names of potential candidates to the board for consideration. The Board of Nominators has indicated that the synod for electing a new archbishop will not be held before May 2025. It must be held no later than 10 August 2025. Brisbane’s archbishop has apologised to the LGBTIQA+ community for harm and hurt caused to them by the Anglican Church in Southern Queensland. The diocese apologised to sexually and gender diverse people for times the Church had not accepted who they were, or had denigrated or excluded them. The apology also named the criminalisation of LGBTIQA+ sexuality and conversion therapy.

The Reverend Canon Dr Rhys Bezzant has been announced as the new principal of Ridley College. Canon Bezzant is currently dean of Missional Leadership at Ridley College, and a canon of St Paul’s Cathedral. In its announcement, the Ridley College Board said “Rhys has demonstrated experience of and love for mentoring [and] equipping the next generation of men and women for God’s mission. Principal principal Brian Rosner announced in March that he would retire at the end of 2024.

Dozens of people have expressed outrage at the University of Divinity’s decision to close its School of Indigenous Studies in an open letter directed to the institution’s leaders. The letter says the decision “makes a mockery” of the university’s stated commitment to Indigenous theological education, and demonstrates deep disrespect to Indigenous theologians, elders and community members.
