Hearing about death at a protest is one thing. Witnessing a body being lifted from the streets and attending the burial of a killed demonstrator is another. Gen Z activist Zaha Indimuli witnessed death at a very personal level last year, and attending the burial of Beasly Kogi – one of the protesters killed in Nairobi on June 25, 2024 – left her with lifelong scars.

He was out on the streets dressed in a suit as others showed up in casual wear, defiantly lifting a teargas canister while shouting. Or speaking on a megaphone. When he spoke, there was an unmissable defiance and a marked eloquence that packed a punch and authority. What sort of name is that?” many wondered when they learnt what he was called.

The front page photo on Wednesday’s Daily Nation, capturing baton-wielding youths running to face off with anti-government protesters the day before, touched a raw nerve in Robert Okoth. I'm one of those who can watch Nat Geo Wild (@NatGeoAnimals) round the clock, but the shows with people in them remind me to wander elsewhere. Vets and snake hunters don't belong there, in my 'wild' opinion.
