1 Willard Livingstone Beard was born in 1865 to a farming family in Huntington, Connecticut, USA. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1891 and returned to Connecticut to attend Hartford Theological School. The young seminarian Beard was assigned to an internship at a church in Staffordville, Conn., where he met his lifelong companion, Ellen Lucy Kinney, a teacher. In 1894, Beard graduated and married.
