In a knife attack in the French city of Mulhouse in late February, one person was dead and several injured. The attacker was an Algerian. Or rather a Muslim immigrant from Algeria. Who is still surprised hearing about an Islamic terrorist attack in Europe? The mainstream media, however, tries to downplay it as much as possible. This also applies to the trial against Hadi Matar (24), who attacked Salman Rushdie on a stage in 2022 in the US. Matar was found guilty of attempted murder last week.

With some reservations, I watched one of George Lucas’s non-sci-fi epics, American Graffiti (1973), a forgotten coming-of-age comedy-drama film. I have to admit; I was completely blown away!By Emad AyshaThis movie is a classic, possibly the best 1950s flick ever made, immortalising that long lost world of smalltown America with its suburban frolics and claustrophobic sprawl.

Following on from my trek through the Cairo International Book Fair, I also had the good opportunity to attend a session by Algeria’s premier author, Wasini al-Araj, who shot to international fame through his erstwhile science fiction novel 2084: The Story of the Last Arab (2015). By Emad AyshaWell, I hate to disappoint you, but in answer to my query, he insisted he wasn’t an SF author, as much as he loved to read from the genre, and that he never saw his novel as science fiction.

Bosnia’s Adnadin Jašarević (born 1967) deserves many accolades, not least of which is that he edited his country’s first-ever almanack for epic and science fiction literature, Prometheus (Prometej, 2000), which is now an established magazine. He is the director of the Museum of the City of Zenica and has been organising the festival ‘Tragovima bosanskog kraljevstva’ (Traces of the Bosnian Kingdom)since 2006.

By freak coincidence I stumbled onto a very reasonably priced secondhand copy of conspiracy thriller Winter Kills (1974), by Richard Condon, legendary author of The Manchurian Candidate. By Emad AyshaThe novel isn’t even pretending to not be about the Kennedy assassination, something even the critics of the movie version figured out straight away – despite the name and date changes. The upshot is that the author, with his literary acumen, may have actually figured out the crime of the century.
