There have been many times over the past several years that I’ve looked up from my laptop or phone screen and thought to myself, “Am I a troll? I must be.” At the very least, I thought, “I am very uncool and I don’t fit in with my fellow women.” Objectively, I realize this is ridiculous. As a 31-year-old married woman with two—soon-to-be three—children, a fulfilling professional career, and a lineup of enriching hobbies, I’m hitting all of the notes of womanhood.

True story: I didn’t realize until after I held a shower for my second baby that doing so was considered “controversial.” I’m the first of my friends to have kids and didn’t grow up in a large family—my baby culture knowledge was minimal, and I frankly just assumed a baby shower was traditional for every new arrival. I didn’t realize it was normally a custom reserved for the first baby.

Four and half years ago I found myself head to head with a stark reality: I was woefully unprepared for pregnancy. Full of blissful, well-intentioned ignorance, I thought I was in for nine months of cute bump pics, nursery shopping, and fabulous hair. What I actually got was debilitating nausea, heartburn that could rival that of a fire-breathing dragon, and (maybe you see where this is going) significant weight gain. Now, I realize “significant” is subjective, so let me provide some numbers.
