As the United States trade war rages on, the Australian government in caretaker mode can’t escape questions about how it is approaching relations with our closest ally. A government spokesperson told The Saturday Paper, “We will cooperate when we can, disagree when we must and engage in our national interest.”That framing of relations with the US is identical to the language the government uses when referring to China. This is a significant and fitting shift.

It’s 1:16am and I can’t sleep. It slowly dawns on me that today is the one-year anniversary of when I became seriously ill, on my own, on the other side of the world. I wouldn’t usually recommend indulging such thoughts in the early hours of the morning, for fear of unhelpful spiralling. But it feels like my body is keeping me awake to make a point.
