Flashes of infrared light can detect signs of cancer in a patient's blood, new research suggests. In a new study, scientists demonstrated that a test using infrared light can detect the difference between blood samples from patients with lung cancer and samples from those without the disease with up to 81% accuracy. They presented their findings in a study published April 9 in the journal ACS Central Science.

THE exact dates a number of WHSmith stores are closing down has been revealed - and some are shutting in days. The stationery retailer has said it will close up to 20 stores in the coming weeks after it agreed to sell off nearly 500 of its high street shops. The Sun can now reveal the dates 10 of these stores are closing for good. First to go are the stores in Halstead and Woolwich, which will be shutting up shop on Saturday.

A drug approved to treat rare genetic diseases can also make human blood toxic to the mosquitoes that spread malaria, a new study finds. The drug, called nitisinone, is currently used to treat two genetic conditions: tyrosinemia type 1 and alkaptonuria. The drug works by inhibiting an enzyme called 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD), which is involved in a chain of chemical reactions known as the tyrosine detoxification pathway.
