My moment came on the warm evening of June 30, 1997, when I stood with Ralph outside my parents’ home, seeing the silhouette of my father and younger sister Rhoda framed in the front porch light and hearing Dad say, “Mom’s been in an accident.”Mom was a nurse, working for both McMaster Children’s Hospital and the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON), a home care nursing agency.

Dear Mom,It’s been so long since we’ve talked. I never had the chance to say goodbye. We all expected you to come home from the hospital the next day. But that changed. Forever. I think of you often. I have a lifetime of good memories. When I got engaged to Jack one of the girls our age from church told me I was getting a sweet deal for a mother-in-law. Funny, she didn’t say anything about my choice of husband! Anyway, she was right. I miss your sense of humour.

Observing the slow shift from winter into spring is therapeutic. I enjoyed time outside recently with my mother–in-law. We made a point to just sit in the sun for a while. With delight, she pointed to the crocuses popping their heads out of the soil in the gardens around her long-term care home. May marks another birthday in our home, this time for Rachel. Turning 17 looks much different for Rachel than for our older children.

For two weeks this past fall, I lived my life in translation. This was not my first time in Taiwan, but from the moment I landed in Taipei I was aware that most of my encounters and experiences involved mediation. Often this was through the kind and gracious work of translators – those who worked hard to put into English the concepts and words and feelings of those speaking to me in Indigenous languages, Taiwanese or Mandarin.
