On November 26, 2024, the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Contract Year (CY) 2026 Policy and Technical Changes to the Medicare Advantage (MA) Program, Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit Program (Part D), Medicare Cost Plan Program, and Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) proposed rule (fact sheet; proposed rule). This is part of an annual rulemaking process that includes both substantive and technical changes to the MA, Part D, and PACE programs.

Children using English as an additional language (EAL) make up more than one-fifth of the pupil population in England, according to the latest school census. These learners are a diverse group, coming from various language, social, economic, and geographical backgrounds, with differing experiences and expectations of school. It is therefore important that these learners receive appropriately tailored support, which can be informed by holistic EAL assessment.

Assessment is a fundamental aspect of teaching and is well-addressed in schools. Assessing learners who use English as an additional language (EAL) though may be a new challenge for some teachers. Carrying out EAL assessments during the autumn term can provide a baseline for the year which can be used to inform teaching.
