Non-fictionThis is a curious book. Even calling it a book is a stretch. Notes to John is “a sort of journal”, according to the introduction to the slim, hardback volume. But only “sort of” because the pieces contained within weren’t intended for Didion’s personal recollections, but rather were addressed to her husband, John Dunne. He is the ‘you’ in these accounts. And remains something of a cypher throughout.
