Hyland made his money in publishing, acquiring the previously Smurfit-owned Business & Finance magazine in 2002, and then the Vincent Browne-founded Magill in 2004. For some, it’s a chance to catch up on the “heavyweight” books of the year – three people have told me they’ll be bringing the new Ocean Vuong, The Emperor of Gladness, with them on their holidays this year – for others, it’s a time for the classics, a dip into Finnegans Wake or Crime and Punishment.

Non-fictionThis is a curious book. Even calling it a book is a stretch. Notes to John is “a sort of journal”, according to the introduction to the slim, hardback volume. But only “sort of” because the pieces contained within weren’t intended for Didion’s personal recollections, but rather were addressed to her husband, John Dunne. He is the ‘you’ in these accounts. And remains something of a cypher throughout.
