Adjuvant chemotherapy of leucovorin-modulated 5-fluorouracil (5-FU/LV), capecitabine, and adding oxaliplatin to 5-FU/LV or capecitabine (FLOX/OX) have been standard regimens for high-risk stage II or III colon cancer (CC). We aimed to evaluate their patterns of use, association with survival, and rate of emergency room visit (ER) or hospitalization during the treatment period.

For some patients, plastic surgery is a way to improve self-confidence. However, recent news stories — including that of a woman who died after having a Brazilian butt lift performed by an improperly licensed surgeon — have shown the dangers of unsafe cosmetic procedures. Fortunately, surgeons like Dr. Alexander Earle of Miami-based Pure Plastic Surgery are dedicated to offering safe, personalized procedures. I’ve been working with a patient, Michael, who has spinal muscular atrophy. Michael uses a motorized wheelchair, and recently moved to a new chair. Since then, he has experienced increased right hip and tailbone pain off and on with numbness down his right leg as he’s tried to get used to the new cushion and chair.

It is important to reach out to other healthcare professionals if you are working with a patient who has a long-lasting complaint you are not able to fully solve. Michael, a patient I work with who has spinal muscular atrophy, has continued to experience increased tailbone pain since moving into his new wheelchair which has a new seat cushion. Since my last article, we met with the company that supports his wheelchair to see if any adjustments could be made to improve his comfort.

While working with any population that isn’t able to independently move around, or doesn’t move frequently for any reason, pressure sores should be checked for regularly. We call these skin checks and they are done to check frequently affected areas, such as bony places on the body or places where the patient puts the most pressure.

Looking forward to this new year of physical therapy with Michael, my patient who has spinal muscular atrophy, we will continue to work toward improving his functionality in the new wheelchair he began using last year. Even though we have been working in this chair for a few months, there have been some alterations that have changed how he utilizes his chair. We had to move the pads on his footrests to allow for increased ease while transferring Michael to and from the therapy table.

Over the past year, we have spent time focusing on various growth areas for my patient with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Michael. Those include edema in his lower extremities, along with ways to improve his benefits for increased lung capacity, and improving flexibility for future strengthening. We’ve also focused on coccyx mobilizations for improved comfort, as well as improving positioning and comfort in his new wheelchair.

Michael, my patient who has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), has recently transferred into a new wheelchair and was experiencing significant discomfort in his right hip while seated. We performed several different modalities and activities on Michael’s tailbone to increase his comfort. A combination of these adjustments was successful at reducing his pain and improving his comfort while sitting, as he does most of the day. As his comfort increased, other adjustments were being made as well.

During the past few weeks, my patient with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Michael, has been adjusting to a new wheelchair. While he’s been in his new chair, he’s had discomfort along his right hip. Due to this increase in discomfort, we have been transferring him each week out of his chair and trying different techniques and modalities to improve his sitting tolerance. He also has sought the consultation of a neurosurgeon to perform any injections or surgeries that would improve his comfort.
