AbstractAn outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) H5N1 in dairy cattle in the United States has spread to at least 136 dairy herds in 11 states. Due to a lack of testing, it has been difficult to determine the number of farms affected and the extent of intrastate spread. We report a pilot study of real time RT-PCR (rRT-PCR) detection of influenza A virus (IAV) in milk purchased from local markets across Michigan.

AbstractBackground: Assessing COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness (VE) and severity of SARS-CoV-2 variants can inform public health risk assessments and decisions about vaccine composition. BA.2.86 and its descendants, including JN.1 (referred to collectively as "JN lineages"), emerged in late 2023 and exhibited substantial genomic divergence from co-circulating XBB lineages.

By Emily MartinHi. This is a straightforward plea from a local high school science teacher to get cell phones out of our schools. I enjoy my job even though I would characterize it as frequently stressful and often overwhelming. Teenagers have big, beautiful hearts, and I consider it an honor to spend time around them. I also consider my job an act of community service. Being a teacher in 2024 is challenging.
