There’s a moment in Hot Milk that looks like a dream: a young woman is floating in the cyan-blue sea under the Spanish sun. It’s idyllic until a jellyfish stings her upper arm; her face contorts in pain, the tide grows choppier, and her hair clings to her skin like tentacles. She swims to the shore and treats the sting, but the red-hot wound is still pronounced. Throughout Hot Milk, the injury fades into a dark scar that wraps around her bicep.

The 1952 documentary Atoms at Work, available on BFI Player, describes the particle of the title as both a “source of destruction” and “one of the greatest creative sources known to man”. The accompanying black-and-white footage shows balloons measuring atmospheric cosmic rays, and technicians using tongs to handle radioactive material.

Throughout his career, Toronto-born film composer Howard Shore has combined mainstream reach with the modernist rigour and range of his influences. Educated at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, his inspirations have included Toru Takemitsu, Ornette Coleman, Nino Rota and John Cage. From 1969 to 1972 he played in jazz-fusion band Lighthouse, before flexing his repertory instincts as music director for Saturday Night Live from 1975 to 1980.
