A woman (Guli) and a pomegranate (Anar) meet in an unfocused liminal space, tinged in hazy green. Have they been asleep forever or for just a second? Is this some heavenly plane, a common garden, or a vague purgatory? Are they old as time or newly created? They awake, confused. They ask each other with suspicion, “who are you?” but it’s clear that they already recognize each other.

Editor’s Note: My Body Unspooling by Leo Fox Won the Outstanding Comic Award at SPX’s 2024 Ignatz AwardsLucille has a ghost-white body. His spirit is a spiked hood that throbs red. When it is not on his head you can see that Lucille has piercing red eyes. Lucille’s body is more masculine one panel, more feminine the next. He seems to be living in an undergrowth of patterns, where creatures of block colour run amongst hues of yellow and purple that bleed into each other.

The suburban moms are killing me. That's what I think as I rush across the set of The Crush House, the reality TV show that I (Jae) am a producer on. The show follows four singles as they live together, fighting and hopefully falling in love over the course of a week in a pink pastel three story home. My job is to be a kind of fairy godmother that keeps the cast happy while giving the fans what they want to see, too, down to granular details.

If you’ve played a farming sim before, you know what I mean. The struggle of pockets getting stuffed with seeds and tools all too quickly is always an issue in this genre, and Fields of Mistria's obvious Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley inspirations made it clear I should beeline for a big bag of slots ASAP. A bigger backpack is the road to a more fun, more efficient parochial existence, and having been down this road before, I knew I needed to save up.

I worked as a bookseller for about half a decade. My favorite part of the job was when people asked me for recommendations. I like to think I got pretty good at it; even now I can still tell you some of the New York Times top lists from 2013. Whether I was helping a grandma trying to figure out the AP level of a six-year-old or a shy teenager preordering a Cassandra Clare book, while doing that job I felt like my positive influence on the world around me was easy to see.

Author bio: Emily Price is a freelance writer and a PhD Candidate in medieval literature. If you lived in the Middle Ages, you’d probably be a laborer. Videogames don’t usually represent this statistical likelihood, and strategy games like Crusader Kings and Age of Empires make you a king or a general above the people. Manor Lords is no different: you pick a sovereign at the beginning and a herald to go along with them.

April is definitely the cruelest month. I read a lot of comics, and I didn’t have any time to write about them. I was really thinking about writing a 420 themed column for April. I actually think it’s worth talking about, I’m not here to take pot-shots at pot-heads. I can’t smoke anymore, I’m recently sober. But speaking as a lapsed stoner, I had a lot of formative comics reading experiences under the sway of the reefer.

About halfway through reading H.B.’s 2023 graphic novel The Chromatic Fantasy, I found myself thinking about the tweet that goes “If you gave a medieval peasant a Dorito they would die instantly.” Anachronisms are funny; it’s understandable that the image of flavor-blasting a 13th-century guy dominated Twitter for a few weeks.
