As the morning dawned, the first rays of sun began to peak through the chapel’s colorful stained-glass windows. The space was full of a stillness so thick it was suffocating. I was the only person there, kneeling off to the side. Head bowed, shoulders hunched, muscles tensed, attempting to contain the pulsing chaos inside my own skin and avoid contaminating my surroundings. The narrator inside my head bargained with God, pleading for answers. What did I do wrong? What is wrong with me?

Every morning, I wake up, haul myself out of bed, and step on the scale. I hold my breath until a number blinks into view between the tips of my toes. That number decides which script will play on repeat in my head for the rest of the day. Track one: “You are disgusting and fat. Don’t screw up again today.” Or Track 2: “Oh my god, your eating disorder is out of control. You’re pathetic.” Either way, I avoid the reflection in my bathroom mirror, ashamed of the dead eyes staring back at me.
