More than 300 students dressed in gowns and suits – and some even in Disney costumes – filled a Gar-Field High School gym on April 10. It was prom day. The festivities were, in many ways, like thousands of proms that came before it, with students donning their nicest clothes, crowding the dance floor, shaking to the beat, smiling, laughing. But it was also unique in a few ways: There was no designated prom king or queen. Instead, every student received a crown to wear, if they wanted.

The Prince William School Board voted recently to retain property adjacent to Gainesville Middle School. The land was being considered for sale as surplus property. The property in question is roughly three acres adjacent to Gainesville Middle and fronting along the University Boulevard extended right of way. The middle school’s address is 8001 Limestone Drive.

Prince William County is hosting its inaugural Student Environmental Action Showcase Thursday at Independence Nontraditional School in mid-county. The community-wide event will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. and follows this year’s Earth Day theme: “Our power, Our Planet.”The event will feature more than 90 student projects developed by over 275 Prince William students and will include expo tables hosted by more than 30 environmental sustainability community partners.

The Manassas City School Board passed a resolution Tuesday night forbidding collective bargaining in the division. The move came as the local teachers union had just begun its campaign to begin the process. The board approved the resolution in a 5-2 vote, with board members Lisa Stevens and Diana Brown opposing. Members of the Manassas Education Association and other teachers and community members turned out in droves to Tuesday’s meeting in support of collective bargaining.

Prince William County Public Schools Superintendent LaTanya McDade has received the School Administrator Award from the Virginia Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Association. McDade was honored with the award at the association’s annual state leadership and recognition conference on Saturday, according to a news release from Prince William schools. The award recognizes school administrators who have given outstanding support to the organization, the release states.
